HEIC or JPG: which to use?
The honest answer is: it depends what the photo is for. Both formats have a clear job.
HEIC wins on quality per byte
At the same visible quality, a HEIC file is roughly half the size of a JPG. It also does more: 16-bit colour instead of 8, transparency, several images in one file — which is where Live Photos come from. On the iPhone it is the right choice and you should not change anything there.
JPG wins everywhere else
JPG is over thirty years old and that is exactly its advantage: every operating system, every print lab, every website, every digital frame and every television reads it. No questions, no extensions, no surprises. For anything leaving your phone it is the safe choice.
The practical compromise
Let the iPhone keep shooting HEIC — that is where you save real storage. Convert only once the photos reach the computer. That way you keep the small files on the phone and the readable ones on the desktop.
