HEIC converters compared
Most converters do the same thing. They differ in four ways, and three of them only show up later.
Where do your photos go?
Most web tools upload your images to someone else’s server, convert them there and promise to delete them after a few hours. You have no way to check. Some tools do all the work inside the browser, so the file never leaves your computer. That difference is testable: switch off the wifi. If it keeps working, it runs locally.
Is the date taken kept?
This is where most of them fail, and you find out weeks later when the holiday folder is in random order. Check it on a converted file: right-click, Properties, Details, Date taken. If the field is empty, that tool deleted the value.
Batch size and resolution
Many free services cap you at five to thirty files per run and then put you in a queue. Some quietly shrink the images to save processing. Neither shows up with two test photos, and both show up with a whole summer.
